I'll be the first to admit that the last thing the IT world needs is yet another IT blog. So why am I doing this?
Firstly: For my own benefit. I have a really bad memory for details and since a lot of my work seems to repeat itself at irregular intervals, it's handy to write down things I have done so I know how to do it in six months time.
Secondly: My personal notes tend to be so cryptic I often don't understand them myself, so it's best if I write them so others can understand. After over twenty years in the game, that seems to work best.
Thirdly: I tend to lose documents, so placing them in a blog seems to work best when I'm trying to find them.
Fourth: Colleagues, friends and clients say they have benefited from my documents, so this is a permanent way to make them available.
Finally: I like to write. Not just technical documentation, but I also write (well used to any) short stories. Usually they are very dark science fiction and occasionally fantasy. So you'll also see the occasional musings on something other than technical information.
My original blog was started around 2003 and covered a variety of topics other than IT: Family history, short stories, family photos and stories, climate change, politics, religion. It was also a front end for a consulting business I was running. It was self-hosted running on an internet facing LAMP server. I shut it down in 2008 and moved some of the content to Facebook in the form of notes. As time and circumstance permit, I will be moving the more relevant articles from my old blog to here with the prefix "old blog".
